LGMA statement at SB64 Just Transition Work Programme

Thank you Co-Chairs, the LGMA Constituency would like to express our appreciation for your work, and the work of the Secretariat, Parties and observers.
We echo South Africa’s comments that people in our cities and communities are depending on this process continuing to move forward and we thank all Parties for working hard to find compromise. We also support comments from other constituencies in the room.
We also want to express our appreciation for the recognition of subnational governments in the informal note as relates to the future Mechanism. Over the past days, we were delighted to hear strong support from Parties for multilevel approaches and for including local and subnational governments, among other non-Party actors, in the future Mechanism.
The LGMA encourages Parties to maintain these positive references and take them forward to Antalya. It is critical to include all constituencies in the Mechanism from the outset whose voices and experiences are critical to ensuring the transition is truly just and equitable.
The LGMA are ready to support Parties and contribute to the Mechanism and its future functions by contributing to knowledge generation and sharing with data, case studies and identifying barriers and solutions at the local level. Thank you.
