Insights from COP27 Negotiations - Update #5

Editor's Note: Our next daily mailing will resume on 14 Nov.
The Summary for Urban Policymakers (SUP) initiative has developed a companion series to the official IPCC 6th Assessment Report (AR6), distilling the latest climate change science for the urban context. Following the launch of the first three SUP reports (Volumes I-III), they also released a stand-alone Action Agenda which captures the key findings from the SUP volumes, but goes beyond the SUP Series and the foundational IPCC reports, to include inputs from city and business leaders gathered through a series of regional convenings.

At the closing of the Global Stocktake Technical Dialogue at COP27, the UNFCCC Secretary encouraged parties to kick off a political process in Dubai at COP28. In response, Yunus Arikan, in his capacity as the LGMA Focal Point, offered the #Stocktake4ClimateEmergency, to be led by local and regional governments and be held in a multilevel fashion, as the most effective tool.

How Cities and Regions engaged at COP27

Climate Emergency Finance: a call to action
ICLEI, UNCDF and FMDV launched today a paper that presents opportunities for action by different key actors to support subnational governments and local climate action.
Breaking out of siloes to achieve urban transformation: recommendations by actor and sector
Siloed approaches will not help cities facing unsustainable, unequal, ad hoc development that traps people in poverty. To solve both climate and broader urban development problems, we need cross-sectoral transformation. A new report shows what that can look like, sector by sector, actor by actor, based on the dozens of case studies and years of research behind the World Resources Report: Towards a More Equal City.

New push to engage young people in climate action
ICLEI’s Vision on Youth Engagement in Global Climate Action states, “Young people should have a say on crucial strategies such as local climate action plans, through appropriate governance structures and processes.”
COP27 highlights the power of climate finance and adaptation in Africa
Speakers during COP27 emphasized that the current finance flows are inadequate and create disparities in the cost of capital. Effective climate actions require investment from both private and public sectors.

Feeding the city for healthy people, landscapes, and climate

Food systems account for up to 37% of global GHG emissions. Since 70% of the world’s food is consumed in urban areas, city leaders have a key role to play in finding local solutions to growing social, economic and environmental challenges and in enhancing urban-rural linkages for greater resilience. This event will explore the role of cities in driving food systems transformation in a multi-level governance context.

Circular agriculture for climate emergency

The vision of Circular Agriculture developed by Turkey's Izmir Metropolitan Municipality is based on ecological agriculture principles and make it accessible to actors in policy and planning. Join this panel to further discussions on ecological principles for a more inclusive and a resilient approach to food production.

From local to global governance: aligning action for sustainable food system transformation
