Leaders urged to spread the messages of the Bonn-Fiji Commitment at home and abroad
At the closing session, Bonn Mayor Sridharan recapped the messages of the first ever Climate Summit of Local and Regional Leaders at a UNFCCC COP. The Summit, he noted, has welcomed over 1,000 participants from all levels of governments representing over 60 countries, including SIDS. The message has been clear – the time has come for national governments to look to local and regional governments as partners to close the gap in the NDCs.
‘’We are delivering,’’ he said, referring to the targets of the Paris Agreement, ‘’as laid out by the carbonn Climate Registry and the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy.’’
The Summit has demonstrated the commitments, initiatives, and potential of local governments. ‘’Fellow climate leaders,’’ he concluded, ‘’thank you for expressing your motivation, your willingness, and your capacity to commit and deliver.’’ For the next step, he urged participants to convey the messages of the Bonn-Fiji Commitment to all stakeholders and allies in their local communities and across the world.
