DG Territorio, the Covenant of Mayors, the Reference Framework for Sustainable Cities and the Torres Vedras City Council

The Directorate-General for Territory in Portugal, the Torres Vedras City Council, the Reference Framework for Sustainable Cities, and the Covenant of Mayors Office are co-organising the conference “Cities leading the way to a sustainable future” that will be held on 17 April in Torres Vedras, Portugal. The objective of this event is to address sustainable and integrated urban development, with particular emphasis on the EU Urban Agenda and European Initiatives that support the implementation of climate and energy policies at the local level. The Secretary of State for Environment, representatives from the Partnerships of the EU Urban Agenda, and local governments will discuss the challenges and opportunities for Portuguese local governments and the way ahead towards building more sustainable and resilient territories.

The objective of this event is to address the theme of sustainable and integrated urban development, with particular emphasis on the Urban Agenda for the European Union, as well as the initiatives promoted by the Council of European Municipalities and Regions. This event is an opportunity to contribute to strengthening the capacities of Portuguese local authorities in these matters, in particular through the articulation of local, national and European policies and initiatives.

About DG Territorio, the Covenant of Mayors, the Reference Framework for Sustainable Cities and the Torres Vedras City Council

The Directorate-General for Territorial Planning and Urban Development and the Portuguese Geographical Institute (DGT) merged to form the DG Territorio. It symbolizes the beginning of a new cycle and the opening of a space for public information and participation that will allow, in a structured and accessible way, to bring the citizen in general, and particularly the communities technical and scientific knowledge, to work and produce information within the scope of its mission. The Covenant of Mayors is a European Initiative launched in 2008 with the ambition to gather local governments voluntarily committed to achieving and exceeding the EU climate and energy targets. The initiative now gathers 7,000+ local and regional authorities across 57 countries drawing on the strengths of a worldwide multi-stakeholder movement and the technical and methodological support. The Reference Framework for Sustainable Cities is a free web tool designed to assist and guide cities of all sizes and all interested stakeholders in developing, implementing and monitoring integrated sustainable urban development strategies and/or projects. The main goal is to make cities greener, more inclusive and more attractive. This tool was developed following the approval of the Leipzig Charter in 2007 by EU Member States’ Ministers responsible for Urban Development.
