Dieter Salomon, the Lord Mayor of Freiburg, Germany opened the first panel focused on holistic development and new models for climate action. He insisted, “Global goals need to be connected to local communities”. We need to include local authorities as equals in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and recognize their accomplishments and contributions to achieving the Paris Agreement.
Mayor Salomon shared that he is passionate about contributing to the SDGs by transforming Freiburg into livable city for future generations. In 2006, the Freiburg sustainability council was formed with a multi-stakeholder approach and 60 policy goals to drive sustainable development in the city. He concluded by saying that cities need to exchange experiences and learn from each other but local governments and citizens will also need active engagement from all players across sectors to achieve the SDGs.
